cocktails.about.com One of the more interesting liqueurs to make an appearance recently has to Agwa. This is an herbal liqueur with a focus on Bolivian coca leaf and it has an interesting taste and effect. It should go without saying because it should be obvious since it is on the U.S. an E.U. market, all of the cocaine alkaloid has been removed from the spirit. Despite that, Agwa is said to have a different style of "buzz" than other liquors, it's one that Agwa's website likens to what you get from an oxygen bar.

So, what to do with this new liqueur that is sure to stir up controversy? Lance Mayhew has an original cocktail, Ryan's Ire, that is a great place to start. Mayhew's drink is simple and allows the Agwa to shine against a background of Four Roses Bourbon. It is a very nice introduction to the intriguing Agwa and one that I recommend trying at least once.
